Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Well if this is getting an LNA and used outsides only, any old 50Ohm coax would do, cheap 75 Ohm sat cable likely too. For passive lossy antennas like the LoG I tend to want really low loss coax, and if that coax will run through the noise halo of a house (or any noise sources for that matter) I'd w...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Tl;dr: We will know more in a few days, sorry. :) dirloop_dike_1.jpg Long (!) version: Of course you know that one can't fully assess an antenna in one night, unless it's radically different from the antenna it's being compared with. I compared it with the LoG because I'm very familiar with its perf...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

I"m out at the dike, forgot the power bank to feed the pre-amp. It appears like this thing really needs one, other than that, it"s a strange animal for sure, not quite as calculated and it's too soon to tell anything definitive but it seems to show some interesting traits. Will report tomo...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Oh well, plus 7.75 shipping ends up more expensive than getting if from the German warehouses (but like I wrote, I ordered the v2 anyway). :)

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Funny enough, I had small zip ties around the wires but then I noticed that I need to remove more insulation (the wire was slipping out of the terminal) so I had to cut them off and didn't replace them yet. The baluns have gone up in price, I ordered the v2 version (which comes with the green connec...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

OK, that took a bit longer than expected. :) Hello_World.jpg Of course I can't really say anything about the function yet from trying if I get signal at all, and indoors 6-7m AGL... but so far... - The passive output of the antenna seems to reflect what I saw on the 4NEC2 plots - it's really weak on...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

I was asking myself the same thing. :)

Making slow progress:

Edit: For stability and size considerations, I'll be using 4x2.2kOhms and 1x 22kOhms parallel = 536 Ohms

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

a way to fit larger wires is to use an electric terminal block (also called "mammut" or "mammoth") in that case the block will sit inside the same box hosting the balun, the antenna wires will come to the block terminals and from there two short runs of thinner wire will go to t...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Yeah I understood this, it's just that I'm usually reluctant to bend coax sharply, even the double foil-shielded stuff, particularly that stiff Belden H-155. Probably unnecessary in this case since that's being bent only once and at the antenna where the integrity of the shield isn't that important....

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Let me try a "masterpiece of art" :D Ah yes, of course - the inside of the loop is probably less prone to be disturbing the pattern and that would indeed solve the problem with the load and the preamp, that could sit just inline with the balun box, at the feed line end equipped with this:...
