Re: Best Region for SWL Hobby
An ocean helps with reception only up to 10 wavelengths away from the coast, that would be 1,000' on 10 MHz. Your place on the globe plays a role mostly in what paths signals take and when. It would help everyone helping you if you'd describe your setup and what you expect to receive.

Re: Another unidirectional small loop: the Coplanar Twin Loop
Welcome to the forum, qrp-gaijin! Hope you guys tell me when it's time to charge my little dremel tool. ~20dB more gain / less losses at little more than 1/2 the size of the SULA sounds pretty intriguing, even though the overall coverage seems to be pretty small (7-21Mhz?). ...check if it ...

Re: What is this burst emission on shortwave?
To me that sounds a lot what some kind of FSK/FDM simplex comms would sound like on AM, has similarities to POCSAG..

Re: Perhaps goofy antenna idea
Okay, but since this a receive-only antenna, do I care about the radiation angle? This is actually a good question! I usually try to avoid the term "radiation angle" in context with reception and SWLing because it feels "wrong" -- receiving antennas don't "radiate" but...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)
Uhmmm... I missed that <sigh> ... ok, the NCPL (YouLoop) impedance is FAR AWAY 50 Ohm, the 1:1 BalUn there is only used to keep the loop balance (to some extent, there's a mod improving that, but that's a different topic) so the SV1AFN is seeing a (probably large) input impedance mismatch and that ...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)
Never tried the LANA-HF with 12V, the NooElec infos on site say that the preamp may survive for a very short time to a 12V supply, but they warn that it may be quickly damaged, and ... well, you demonstrated it :( Though there is protection circuitry on LaNA HF Barebones for overvoltage conditions-...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)
I got the replacement SV1AFN preamp today (the first one lacked an inductor :)) and gave it a brief indoor function test with the YouLoop. 1_YL-SV1AFN_20220912_224618.jpg First off, as expected it does not work with 5V so I'd have to rethink my preamp power supply for portable operation. With 12V it...

Re: Perhaps goofy antenna idea
I'm by no means an antenna expert but in addition to what Andrew said, AFAIK OCF dipoles are trading symmetry for the simple match, making them potentially more vulnerable to near-field noise pickup (which is something I experienced several years ago when I replaced an OCF dipole I made to save on c...

Re: The SULA antenna
I tried that with a ML-200 (NTi/Bonito) preamp and the results were not good, the pattern disappeared and even reversed on some SW bands. The antenna really needs the balun to work.JohnGreen-SWL wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 6:35 pm Posted on YouTube SULA test indoors with preamp in place of 9:1 balun

Re: The SULA antenna
There's more, I hope John doesn't mind linking them all here, I'm just so exited to see other OMs using the SULA!
Thanks for trying the SULA, John! It's really rewarding to watch these videos!
