Re: The Belka (-DSP/-DX) appreciation thread

Today I received my "backup"-Belka, got robbed by German customs and I just did one of my after midnight walks with this to prove that transoceanic MW reception in true pocket size might be a thing now: Portable_MW_Rig.jpg We're now exactly in the middle of the mid-winter anomaly I guess, ...

Re: The Belka (-DSP/-DX) appreciation thread

Hi Mike! Glad you finally got yours too! Yes indeed, what strikes me most is that it never makes me think "aw, if I had a big antenna connected now, I could hear this" when I'm DXing on walks. Re MW DXing, I'm incredibly curious if "transatlantic DX on walks" could be a thing, fo...

Re: Strange afternoon MW DX flare (5,500 and 7,500km!)

HI Andrew! Glad to hear you're alive and sorry to hear you're so busy, I hope it's at least something fun stealing your radio related time! :) I'm curious with what you came up with again! Re the SULA, unfortunately it's not very good in my den as I recently confirmed again when I wanted to test som...

Re: Strange afternoon MW DX flare (5,500 and 7,500km!)

I obviously like it to bits! :) No, seriously, it's not having any severe highpass/reduced sensitivity issues typical for ham transceivers on MW/LW and it has all the nice tools one would want in a MW DX radio (particularly passband tuning and notch filter), being an SDR and showing me faint carrier...

Re: Strange afternoon MW DX flare (5,500 and 7,500km!)

I monitored that frequency in the past days a little more: - Saturday : Conditions were more or less the same as on Friday (high A-index) and I heard R. Kitaya just like on Friday. The station faded in around the same time for half an hour, then disappeared again until 19:00, 4 hours later, just to ...

Strange afternoon MW DX flare (5,500 and 7,500km!)

Friday afternoon (November 4th) around 14:20 UTC (15:20 local) I was scanning the MW band with my indoor YouLoop, when I heard an unusual Russian speaking station on an unusual frequency of 1521 kHz getting stronger and stronger. MWList.org had nothing Russian in the Europe/Africa/Middle East list f...

Re: The Belka DSP/DX appreciation thread

Well maybe not THAT wild, I forgot to bring the booze..:D Alas it was too rainy to do any serious testing but dang... I didn't expect it to be any good with the whip on MW but it is actually pretty decent! I have portables (cough, S-8800. cough) with a pretty huge loopstick inside that don't pick up...

Re: Best Region for SWL Hobby

I'm not aware of any privileged DX country on the globe. The very point of shortwave and its skywave propagation is that "distance" plays a different role. You can receive stations from the other side of the globe on any continent -- well it's actually a very complex matter, there can be l...
