Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

hi, first of all let me say that I wasn't expecting a full test, just some initial impressions, and then, no need to be sorry, YOU BUILT IT and took the effort of testing it, so you have all my gratitude, THANKS THANKS THANKS that said. let me add some notes, refer to the images related to the anten...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

I"m out at the dike, forgot the power bank to feed the pre-amp. It appears like this thing really needs one, other than that, it"s a strange animal for sure, not quite as calculated and it's too soon to tell anything definitive but it seems to show some interesting traits. Will report tom...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

forgot, if you have time, load the NEC model and run a sweep between 0.1 and 33.01, set the step at 0.2 and check the gain curve, then run another sweep between 80 and 130 and check the gain curve, finally run a pattern check at 90 MHz and look at the 3D lobes

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Funny enough, I had small zip ties around the wires but then I noticed that I need to remove more insulation (the wire was slipping out of the terminal) so I had to cut them off and didn't replace them yet. The baluns have gone up in price, I ordered the v2 version (which comes with the green conne...

as for weather... don't know how it is "up there" but here it's sunny, 31°C at the moment (09:08 AM)

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

well https://www.amazon.com/NooElec-Balun-One-Nine-Applications/dp/B00R09WHT6 and then, I have some v2, they work a bit better than v1, the other option is to pick a binocular core and wind the balun as for the v2, check the download section here https://www.nooelec.com/store/balun-one-nine-v2-bareb...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

well, given signal reflections inside and all factors, the nulling seems promising; as for the balun... SIGH, but then it's a lesson I learned myself as well, ALWAYS use terminal blocks (if not using nuts and bolts) since they'll get the strain and not the balun, also, to lock the wires, a pair if n...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

good !! I can't wait to read about the real world test !

as for the LoG, just put together a NEC model, place the wire at 1cm or so from ground, so NEC won't complain and see what comes out

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

a crazy thought (maybe), I wonder if using the same approach, that is resistor and balun at the opposite corners, it may be possible to make the LoG directional; I'll need to run some NEC simulations to check the idea...

Re: Kit Radios

My first SWL radio was a kit radio from back in the day. I have many great memories from building it with my Dad to the many days/nights of listening. I still use it from time to time...will never give it up. Does anyone still listen using a kit or home brew radio? not using a kit radio, but built ...
