Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Here's something which may be interesting https://www.ve7ca.net/Ant160.htm#LNLoop in this case there's no balun and the antenna uses a "special" preamp, but the notes about the choke may be of interest as for the pattern, your tests show that the backside null is there and that it's deep e...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

a bit OT, but I was thinking at it and... ok, let me explain, let's say someone bought the "el cheapo" chinese MLA30 loop https://www.g8jnj.net/activeantennas.htm#MLA30 now, if one has it in the junkbox, recovering it, replacing the noisy bias-t unit and adding it a BNC connector to use be...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

the fact that the LNA isn't working as expected down to MW/LW is strange, judging from the NEC model, the antenna gain "down there" should be quite low and the backside even lower, so it's really strange as for height, I think it should be tested with better propagation when any signal cha...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Looks like we have a really bad radio blackout, local kiwisdr has nothing on 18 MHz either, I only hear south American stations on 20m...dammit. Edit: A=24 right now, probably the right time to explore the FM band then 😊 well; there's little one can do if propagation doesn't collaborate, at least u...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Out at the dike again, but condx are really bad or something is wrong, but I'm on 15 MHz and if I turn the antenna to the south I can fade the thunderstorm crackling in and out, cool stuff :) is the resistor pack ok ? I wonder if it may be damaged (resistor cracked) ... ok, probably I'm just a pess...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

a pot may be ok to experiment, but won't be ok for a "final" loop, also, changing the resistor value will result in an impedance mismatch, not a big issue, but may affect LNA performance; also, if the target is LW/MW the same idea will work, but increasing the loop diameter (side) and then...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

as a note, while running the NEC simulations I found (it was expected) that by lowering the resistor to about 200 Ohm or so, the cardioid pattern disappears, while, raising it to 1K or more, the pattern is more pronounced and the lobe becomes lower and narrower, this at the expense of gain (rising t...

Re: The small SWL beam (1...30 MHz)

Well if this is getting an LNA and used outsides only, any old 50Ohm coax would do, cheap 75 Ohm sat cable likely too. For passive lossy antennas like the LoG I tend to want really low loss coax, and if that coax will run through the noise halo of a house (or any noise sources for that matter) I'd ...
